چکیده

[1] Magnetostatic interactions have been investigated in an intergrown material consisting of 200-nm magnetite blocks separated by 30-nm-wide ulvöspinel lamellae. First-order reversal curve (FORC) measurements provide a direct measure of the interaction fields, giving a value for the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 30 mT (at Hc = 20 mT). Hysteresis parameters are Mrs/Ms = 0.22, Hcr/Hc = 1.98 and transient energy dissipation (TED) = 0.18. Elimination of the intergrowth structure (by heating in vacuo) causes the FORC contours to shrink down toward the origin, yielding FWHM = 14 mT (at Hc = 6 mT) with corresponding changes in Mrs/Ms, Hcr/Hc and TED to 0.11, 2.73 and 0.28, respectively. All these characteristics reveal the strong influence of particle-to-particle magnetostatic interactions between the magnetite blocks in the starting material and demonstrate the change from single-domain/pseudosingle-domain to multidomain behavior due to the fundamental structural change brought about by the experimental homogenization. Micromagnetic calculations of particle assemblages representative for the intergrown structure confirm that the magnetite blocks will interact by assuming a supervortex magnetization structure.

Ferromagnetic resonance spectroscopy for assessment of magnetic anisotropy and magnetostatic interactions: A case study of mutant magnetotactic bacteria

[1] Ferromagnetic resonance spectroscopy (FMR) can be used to measure the effective magnetic field within a sample, including the contributions of both magnetic anisotropy and magnetostatic interactions. One particular use is in the detection of magnetite produced by magnetotactic bacteria. These bacteria produce single-domain particles with narrow size and shape distributions that are often el...

Direct imaging of nanoscale magnetic interactions in minerals.

The magnetic microstructure of a natural, finely exsolved intergrowth of submicron magnetite blocks in an ulvöspinel matrix is characterized by using off-axis electron holography in the transmission electron microscope. Single-domain and vortex states in individual blocks, as well as magnetostatic interaction fields between them, are imaged at a spatial resolution approaching the nanometer scal...

Self-Assembly of Flux-Closure Polygons from Magnetite Nanocubes.

Well-defined nanoscale flux-closure polygons (nanogons) have been fabricated on hydrophilic surfaces from the face-to-face self-assembly of magnetite nanocubes. Uniform ferrimagnetic magnetite nanocubes (∼86 nm) were synthesized and characterized with a combination of electron microscopy, diffraction, and magnetization measurements. The nanocubes were subsequently cast onto hydrophilic substrat...

Nanofabrication of two-dimensional arrays of magnetite particles for fundamental rock magnetic studies

[1] Magnetic measurements of samples with precisely controlled magnetic mineralogy, grain size, and interparticle spacing are needed to provide crucial experimental rock magnetic underpinning for paleomagnetic studies. We report a novel nanofabrication method for producing two-dimensional arrays of cylindrical synthetic magnetite particles with well-defined composition, particle size, and inter...

Alteration of the Magnetic Properties of Aquaspirillum magnetotacticum by a Pulse Magnetization Technique.

The presence of a narrow shape and size distribution for magnetite crystals within magnetotactic organisms suggests strongly that there are species-specific mechanisms that control the process of biomineralization. In order to explore the extent of this control, cultures of Aquaspirillum magnetotacticum in the exponential growth phase were exposed to increasing magnetic pulses with the aim of s...
